Dear Consumers:

We recognize that news about a large meat recall following the release of undercover video in a meat packing plant is disturbing and unsettling.  We share your concern because humane handling is precisely what we strive for every minute of every day in our plants. And recalls are the very action our companies work tirelessly to prevent.

It is important to note that the recall of Hallmark/Westland meat products now under way was declared Class II by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as opposed to a Class I recall, which is used when a clear public health threat exists.  USDA has made clear that this recall was triggered by an inspection procedure violation, not a food safety failure.  In a media briefing, USDA Under Secretary for Food Safety Richard Raymond, M.D., said, “We do not feel this product presents a health risk of any significance, but the product was produced in noncompliance with our regulations and therefore we do have to take this action.”

Because the recall extends far back in time, the pounds recalled are extremely large, but most of the meat involved has either been consumed or is on hold, according to USDA.  No food safety issues have been associated with this product.

The handling of animals in this plant stands in start contrast to the handling that our industry recommends and embraces. Since 1991, we’ve worked to not just meet federal regulations but to exceed them using practices recommended by our animal welfare scientific advisor Dr. Temple Grandin.   Dr. Grandin, who firmly believes that “you manage what you measure,”  developed an audit system for the meat industry that involves measuring a host of factors like how often a cow moos, how often they are prodded or how often livestock slip or fall.  To read a brochure about our welfare efforts, click here.

As a mother, I understand that high profile stories can be upsetting, but I assure you that I remain confident in the safety of the US. beef supply and of our nation’s school lunches and I pledge that our industry is working hard to meat your expectations and maintain your trust..
